Our local public hospital & home care services are at serious risk from escalating cuts & privatization
Maternity units, labs, physio, entire wards, even entire hospitals are at risk of closure as a result of funding cuts. For 9 years in a row the Ontario government has set funding levels for hospitals at less than the rate of inflation. For the last 4 years, funding has been frozen at a 0% increase. In real-dollar terms this means hospital budgets can’t keep up with inflation, let alone population growth and aging.
Year after year, more and more services are cut. After decades of downsizing, hospital staff are cut to the bare bones. And virtually every service cut from our local hospitals is privatized. Patients face a growing array of user fees, like outrageous parking fees, and are being charged hundreds or even thousands of dollars for private clinics, home care and long-term care.
Now, the government has a plan to contract out and privatize virtually all our home care system, and start up competitive bidding again unless we stop them.
