The Ontario government has been quietly awarding new 30-year licenses and thousands of new and rebuilt bed allotments to long-term care homes. The majority of licenses have gone to for-profit, private homes rather than public, non-profit homes despite the woeful record of the for-profit long-term care industry during the pandemic and before. Local Health Coalitions in Southwest Ontario held a press conference to call on the Ford government to explain why for-profit LTC homes with dismal records before and during COVID-19 are being rewarded with new licenses and bed allotments in SW Ontario paid for by public money, while at the same time, no penalties have been levied against them for the suffering and preventable deaths of residents.
