Bryan Smith Wins the Inaugural Social Justice Award

If you want to see what a true social justice warrior looks like, you need to only look at a day in Bryan Smith’s life.

WOODSTOCK – The Social Planning Council of Oxford has handed out the inaugural Social Justice Award last night.

The yearly award recognizes community members who devote their time and energy to the pursuit of social justice. This years award went to Bryan Smith who is very active in the community and the President of the Oxford People Against Landfills.

The award celebrates those who work for social change and provide services to members of our community who in need.

The award criteria is as follows:

– Clear impact on the community that can be attributed to the work of the nominated individual or group;

– The work of the individual or group is ongoing;

– Shows a commitment to social justice causes;

– Is a trailblazer in matters of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the context of organizational change, community engagement and/or social transformation.

Smith certainly meets all of the criteria listed above and is well known in the community. He wears many hats in Oxford working with the Social Planning Council Oxford, member of the Zero Poverty Oxford; Future Oxford Sustainability; Lunch Bunch and Supper Club; the Ontario Health Coalition; Oxford Coalition for Social Justice; Children’s Water Festival, OPAL and Reuseaplooza, just to name a few.

The quote on the plaque given to Smith is from Mother Teresa and it reads:
